I Believe in Jim Jones (November, 2007)-
This needlepoint was sparked from a photo of
a Jonestown cult member. The level of
commitment that the cult members had never
knowing that in the end over 900 people would
be dead. I think it's very telling that the sign
says, 'I believe in Jim Jones'. Although many
thought him the second coming, it was the
man that everyone followed into madness.
The Devil Dog (July, 2008)- I have been working
on a new series linking "Faust" to the Son of Sam
murderer, David Berkowitz. This needlepoint
depicts the Devil. In the beginning of "Faust",
the Devil comes in the disguise of a black poodle.
The image of the Hell hound appears again and
again in popular culture, but usually, in the form
of a powerful and frightening dog.I love the
contrast of such a frightening demon becoming an
animal that is thought to be so genteel. It just
reinforces the idea that it isn't the deformed
monsters that we should beware of. It is often
the people or animals that make us feel the
safest that are the monsters.
Ester and Baby Bill ( July, 2008)- This
needlepoint was done from an old family
photo. I wanted to keep a ghostly dark
feeling in the image since the people are no
longer with us. I used several different
stitches to add texture and a turn of the
century feel.
